사도행전을 통해서 초대교회의 역사를 살펴볼 때, 우리는 큰 기쁨으로 가득하게 됩니다. 거기에는 하나님께 대한 즐거운 헌신, 뜨거운 성도의 교제, 신자들 사이에 주고받는 풍성한 사랑으로 주변 사람들을 놀라게 했던 이야기들이 있습니다. 주님은 구원받는 사람들을 날마다 더하셨습니다(행 2:41-47). 복음은 널리 전파되었고, 수천명씩 주님께 돌아왔으며, 교회는 여러 지역에서 세워졌습니다. 하나님은 실로 놀라운 방법으로 역사하고 계셨던 것입니다.

그런데 우리는 곧 사단이 하나님의 역사를 훼방하고 교회를 공격하기 시작하는 것도 보게 됩니다. 처음에 사단은 방해와 박해의 방법을 사용하였는데, 이 방법은 신자들로 하여금 오히려 주님께 기도하면서 주님을 더욱 의존하고 신뢰하도록 할뿐이었습니다. 초대교회의 신자들은 흩어지면서, 그들이 가는 곳마다 복음을 전파했습니다. 그 결과로 더욱 많은 사람들이 주님께 돌아오게 되었습니다.

따라서 사단은 더욱 무시무시한 방법으로 공격하기 시작했습니다. “빛의 천사”로 가장한 사단은 할수만 있다면 신자들을 미혹하여 하나님의 일이 방해를 받도록 하고자 했습니다. 사단의 그러한 계략에 대해 다음과 같이 정리해 보았습니다.
1. 아나니아와 그의 아내 삽비라의 외식적인 행동 - 행 5장
2. 신자들 사이에 파당이 생긴 결과로 서로를 원망하게 함 - 행 6장
3. 유대와 사마리아 지역에 복음을 전하는 일을 주저주저함으로, 신자들을 강제로 흩어버리기 위한 박해를 불러옴- 행 8장
4. 하나님의 택하신 그릇임에도 사울을 영접하기를 꺼림 - 행 9장
5. 이방인에게 복음을 전한 일로 베드로를 비난함으로, 그들의 폐쇄적인 정신을 드러냄 - 행 11장
6. 거짓 교사들이 지역 교회에 다니며 율법주의를 전하기 시작함 - 행 15장

그렇기 때문에, 바나바가 안디옥에 있는 새로운 신자들에게 사역하기를 시작하면서 “저가 이르러 하나님의 은혜를 보고 기뻐하여 모든 사람에게 굳은 마음으로 주께 붙어 있으라 권(to remain true to the Lord with all your heart)”(행 11:23)하기 시작했던 일에 대해 우리는 놀랄 필요가 없는 것입니다.

바나바는 하나님이 안디옥에서 놀라운 일을 시작하신 것을 보고 깨달았습니다. 그러나 사단은 또다시 공격해올 것이 분명했습니다. 사단의 공격은 예루살렘에서 온 율법주의 형태로 나타났는데, 이내 복음을 변질시키기 시작했습니다(갈 2:11-14).

따라서, 바울과 바나바가 갈라디아 지역의 교회들을 다시 방문하면서 “그 믿은바(true to the faith)”를 주께 부탁(행 14:23)하며 신자들을 격려한 일에 대해서도 그다지 놀라지 않아도 되는 것입니다.

이제 바울 서신들을 통해서, 우리는 교회 가운데 그 모습을 드러내기 시작한 악한 자의 역사를 보게 됩니다.
1. 고린도 교회의 신자들은 그 주변의 악에 의해 영향을 받아 세상적인 사람들이 되었습니다.
2. 갈라디아 여러 지역 교회의 신자들은 율법주의적인 가르침에 의해 오류에 빠지게 되었고, 그 결과로 주님 안에서 기쁨을 누리지 못하고 있었습니다.
3. 빌립보 교회의 신자들에게는 교만과 이기적인 징후들이 나타났습니다.
4. 골로새 교회의 신자들은 거짓 교사들에 의해 교리적인 혼돈에 빠지게 되었습니다.

사단은 이러한 1세대 신자들을 공격하면서, 하나님의 역사를 아예 파괴하거나 적어도 어느 정도 훼방하고자 했습니다.

한국 모임 가운데 역사하는 하나님의 은혜의 여러 가지 증거들을 볼 수 있는 특권을 가졌던 우리 몇 사람은, 하나님이 이루신 모든 일로 인해 크게 기뻐하고 있습니다. 한국 모임과 한국의 모든 성도들로 인해 우리 하나님을 찬양합니다. 그러나 우리도 바나바처럼, “굳은 마음으로 주께 붙어 있으라”는 권면의 말과 함께 “그 믿은바(true to the faith)”를 주께 부탁해야만 한다는 마음의 부담이 있습니다.

사도 요한은 요한서신서를 30년 후에 기록했습니다. 요한서신서에서 우리는 2세대 신자들, 곧 초대교회 신자들의 자녀들이 처한 위험에 대해 보게 됩니다. 사도 요한은 그들의 믿음의 진실성에 대해 염려하고 있었던 듯이 보입니다. 이 2세대 신자들은 자신들이 “하나님과 사귐이 있다”하며, 또한 “저를 아노라”고 주장하는 사람들이었습니다.

사도 요한이 근심했던 바는, 이러한 2세대 그리스도인들에게서 순종과 사랑, 그리고 그리스도께 대한 헌신의 증거를 볼 수 없었다는 것입니다.

한국 모임도 이제 이러한 문제들에 직면하고 있는 것 같습니다. 현재 한국 모임 성도의 자녀들 가운데 많은 청년들이 대학을 졸업하고, 직장을 구하고 있다고 들었습니다. 물론 여러분은 그들을 잘 가르쳐왔습니다. 그들은 조용하고, 또 경건해 보입니다. 그들은 성경을 알고 있습니다. 그들은 집회에 잘 참석하고 있습니다. 그러나 어찌된 일인지 1세대의 헌신과 사랑, 그리고 순종의 삶은 결여되어 있는 듯합니다.

선교사들은 이러한 위험을 잘 인식하고 있습니다. 우리는 이러한 현상이 전세계에 걸쳐 일어나고 있음을 보고 있습니다. 모든 나라의 1세대 그리스도인들에게서는 삶 속에서 복음을 전하고, 그리스도를 향한 사랑으로 불타는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 그들은 자기 자녀들이 성공하기를 바라는 마음에서 2세대들에게 고등 교육을 받게 합니다. 그러므로 2세대는 좋은 직장을 얻고, 상당한 재산을 모아 자신의 자녀들은 부유한 가정에서 자라도록 합니다. 따라서 3세대는 종종 거의 명목상의 신자인 경우가 많으며, 4세대는 복음에 대해 거의 무관심한 채 자라나게 됩니다.

사도 요한은 또 다른 위험에 대해 알고 있었습니다. 우리가 아는대로 초대 교회 시대에는 선교사들은 어느 도시에 가서, 사역을 일으키고, 그후에 또다른 교회를 개척하기 위해 그 도시를 떠나 다른 도시로 계속해서 나아갔습니다. 이러한 방법이야말로 성경에 나타난 선교 방법이며, 그 결과로 많은 교회들이 개척될 수 있었습니다. 새로운 교회들은 하나님에 의해 양무리의 목자로 세워진 장로들의 리더십 아래서 큰 축복을 받았으며, 장로들은 성도들에게 하나님을 위해 사는 삶의 본을 보여 주었습니다.

사도 요한은 지역 교회들에게 편지를 쓰면서, 한 사람이 모임을 좌지우지할 위험에 대해서 경고했습니다. 그러한 사람은 교회 가운데 으뜸되기를 좋아하며, 자신의 권위를 위협한다고 생각하는 형제들에게는 성도를 방문하는 일조차 엄금합니다. 요한삼서 9-10절을 보십시오. 이러한 일은 참으로 위험한 일입니다. 사단은 여러 곳에서 하나님의 역사를 망치기 위해서 이러한 방법을 사용해왔습니다.

한국 모임의 경우, 하나님은 몇 명의 은사있는 형제들을 복음전도자와 선교사로 부르셔서, 전국적으로 교회를 개척할 뿐만 아니라, 해외에까지 교회를 세우도록 하셨습니다. 하나님을 찬양합니다. 그러나 교회들이 개척되는 일 뿐만 아니라 우리가 계속해서 “참되게 주님과 믿음에” 거하는 일이 함께 중요한 것입니다.

만일 선교사가 모임의 영적인 아버지로서 계속해서 한 곳에 안주하게 되면, 그 모임에는 하나님의 방법인 “장로들”이 일어날 기회가 없게 됩니다. 한 곳에 안주하지 않고, 계속해서 나아감으로써 하나님의 역사가 지속되도록 하는 일에는 신령한 지혜가 필요합니다. 사단은 장로가 되기에 합당한 사람이 없으며, 은사있는 형제가 없다는 핑계로 우리를 속일 수 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그분의 말씀을 통해, 장로를 세우고, 교회에 은사를 주시는 분은 바로 성령님이시라는 사실을 분명히 보여주십니다.

여러 지역 교회에서 흔히 사용하고 있는 “전심 사역자(full-time worker)”라는 말을 들었습니다. 그 말은 모임 안에서 어떤 위치(position)를 가리키는 데에 사용되는 것처럼 보이는데, 결코 그것은 주님을 위한 사역에 있어서 합당한 방법이 아닙니다. 그것은 성경적인 용어가 아닐뿐더러, 우리도 매우 조심하지 않으면 사단에게 속임을 받을 수 있는 것입니다.

만일 한 형제가 하나님의 백성들을 섬기도록 부르심을 받았다면, 그 형제는 반드시 자신이 주 예수님의 종-노예일 뿐만 아니라, 하나님의 백성들의 종-노예라고 하는 사실을 깨달아야 합니다(고후 4:5). 결코 양무리 위에 군림하고자 해서는 안됩니다.

하나님은 한국에서 당신의 일을 축복하셨습니다. 그러나 한국 모임은 이제 기로에 서있습니다. 그러므로 사랑하는 형제들이여, 우리는 오래전 하나님의 종들이 그러했던 것처럼, 여러분들이 “굳은 마음으로 주께 붙어 있고, 그 믿은 바에 진실되게 행하기를” 격려하며, 주께 부탁하는 것입니다.

As we read the history of the early church in the Acts of the Apostles, we are filled with great joy. There was devotion to God, sweet fellowship, love among the believers providing a powerful testimony to those around. The Lord added to their numbers daily those who were being saved. (Acts 2:41-47) The gospel message spread and thousands turned to the Lord, churches were established in various places. God was working in a wonderful way.

We see that Satan began to attack the church to hinder God's work. At first, he used opposition and persecution but this only caused the believers to pray and depend on the Lord. When they were scattered, they preached the gospel wherever they went. The result was that more than ever people turned to the Lord.

So Satan began to attack in a more dangerous way. As an “angel of light” he was able to influence the believers so that the work of God would be hindered. We note some of his methods:-
1. the hypocrisy of Ananias and his wife in ch5.
2. the growth of groups among the believers resulting in murmuring in ch6.
3. hesitation to take the Gospel to Judea and Samaria, requiring persecution to force the believers to scatter ch8
4. reluctance to welcome Saul, though he was God's chosen vessel ch9
5. criticism of Peter for taking the gospel to the Gentiles, revealing a spirit of exclusiveness ch11
6. wandering preachers began spreading legalism in the churches ch15

We should feel no surprise then, that when Barnabas began to minister to the new believers in Antioch “..he was glad when he saw the grace of God and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts..” Acts 11:22

Barnabas recognized that God had begun a wonderful work in Antioch. Satan would attack it. This attack came in the form of legalists who came from Jerusalem and began to pervert the gospel. Gal 2:11-14

Again, we should not be surprised that Paul and Barnabas revisited the churches in Galatia to encourage them to “remain true to the faith” Acts 14:23

As we read Paul's epistles we note the evils which began to reveal themselves in the churches:-
1. The Corinthians believers were worldly, affected by evil around them.
2 The Galatian believers were tripped up by legal teachings and had lost their joy in the Lord
3. The Philippian believers were showing signs of pride and selfishness.
4. The Colossian believers were being confused by false teachers.

Satan was attacking these 1st generation believers, seeking to destroy or at least, to hinder God's work.

Those of us who have had the privilege to see the evidence of the grace of God at work in South Korea, rejoice in all that God has done. We praise God for every believer and for every assembly. However, like Barnabas, we feel an urge to encourage you “to remain true to the Lord with all your heart “ and “true to the faith”.

John wrote his epistles some 30 years later. In them, we can see the danger of 2nd generation believers, the children of those first believers. It seems John was concerned about the reality of their faith. These were the ones who claimed “.. to have fellowship with Him.....; the ones who said “I know him....” .

John's concern was that he could not see evidence of obedience, of love and of commitment to Christ in these 2nd generation Christians.

The churches in Korea are just beginning to face this problem. Many of your children are now finishing University and finding employment. You have taught them well. They appear quiet and godly. They know the Scriptures. They attend the meetings. But somehow, the love, the commitment and the obedience of the 1st generation seems lacking.

Missionaries recognize this danger. We see it happening all over the world. In every country, the 1st generation is evangelized and they are full of love for Christ. They want their children to succeed so the 2nd generation is highly educated. They then get good jobs and their children grow up in a home with plenty of money so the 3rd generation are often only nominally believers and their children, the 4th generation grow up hardened to the gospel.

John identifies another danger. We note that in the early church, the missionaries moved to a city, established a work, then moved on to another city to plant another church. This was the pattern of the work and the result was the planting of many churches. The new churches were blessed by God under the leadership of elders who were appointed to be shepherds of the flock, showing believers by their example how to live for God.
John writes to warn of the danger to the churches when one man has taken control of an assembly. He wanted to be pre-eminent and prevented any who challenged his authority from even visiting the believers. See 3 John v9-10. This was a very dangerous thing. Satan has used this method to stop God's work in many places.

In Korea, God has called some gifted brothers to be evangelists and missionaries to plant churches throughout the country and overseas. We praise God. It is important that we continue to “remain true to the Lord and to the faith” as churches are planted.

If the missionary, as the spiritual father of the assembly stays on, there may be no opportunity for God's pattern of “elders” to be seen in the assembly. It requires spiritual wisdom to see that we should move on to allow God's work to continue. Satan can deceive any of us by suggesting that there is no one ready to be an elder or there is no gift, when God has shown us in His word that it is the Holy Spirit who appoints elders and gives gifts to the assembly.

We hear the words “full-time worker” being used among the assemblies. It seems to be used to describe a position in an assembly and not the way a ministry for the Lord is carried out. It is not a Scriptural term and Satan may deceive us if we are not very careful.

If a brother is called to serve God's people, he must understand that he is a bond-slave of the Lord Jesus but also a bond-slave of God's people (see 2 Cor 4:5). He is not to dominate over the flock.

God has blessed His work in Korea. But the churches are now at the cross roads and like the servants of old, dear brethren, we want to encourage you; “remain true to the Lord and remain true to the faith”.
